3 Things You Need to Know Before Traveling to New York City

Posted on November 18, 2022

With more than 56 million tourists in 2022, New York is one of the most-visited places in the world. And with one of the strongest economies in the world, New York’s business sector continues to boom.

Yes, New York is crowded for a city, but that’s its charm. The Big Apple offers its entertainment industry diversity, technology, and opportunities.

Because of that, it has become one of the biggest tourist destinations. New York City is one of those places you can visit again and again and have a new experience every single time.

Read on to learn everything you need before traveling to New York City.

1. NYC is Best Navigated by Using Public Transportation

The subway system is extensive and the best way to travel to New York. If you’re not used to public transportation, it can be a little daunting at first, but you’ll get the hang of it in no time. Have a map with you, so you know which train to take.

You must purchase a MetroCard from a vending machine to ride the subway or bus. The subway runs 24 hours a day, but buses only operate from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Furthermore, be prepared to walk a lot. New York is a big city, and even though the subway can get you around, you’ll still do a lot of walking to get to and from your destinations.

If you need a service from the airport, getting a car service can offer you lots of conveniences. Getting a taxi can be pretty challenging as the airport is always crowded. Make sure to research local airport car services for more info on their services.

2. See Times Square

Times Square is always busy, day and night. If you want to avoid crowds, visit early in the morning or late at night to experience New York at its finest. Aside from shopping, check out the top of the Empire State Building, visit one of the many museums or art galleries, or see a Broadway show.

Additionally, be aware of your surroundings and keep your belongings close to you. Times Square is a pickpocket’s paradise.

Furthermore, New York City can be expensive, but there are ways to save money. Eat at ethnic restaurants outside of Times Square, and take advantage of free New York sights and attractions like Central Park.

3. Tipping is Important

Before traveling to New York City, it is vital to know the local customs surrounding tipping. Generally, it’s customary to tip 15-20% of the bill for good service at a restaurant. If you’re taking a taxi, it’s common to tip 10-15% of the fare.

If you’re staying at a hotel, it’s customary to tip the housekeeping staff $2-5 per day. Keep in mind that these are just general guidelines – you can always tip more or less depending on your level of satisfaction. Tipping is not required, but it is considered good etiquette.

Be Prepared When Traveling to New York City for the Best Experience

If you’re planning on traveling to New York City, you must know the high costs of living and dining out in NYC. You’ll also want to ensure you’re familiar with the public transportation system and how to navigate the city.

Also, consider the cost of transportation, accommodation, and the best time to visit. Once you have all this information, you can start planning your dream trip to New York City. Be prepared for the fast-paced lifestyle and be ready to experience all New York City has to offer!
