Only 22% of American college students live in on-campus dorms; the majority reside in either regular rental housing or off-campus university housing.

If you’re living off-campus, then it might feel like you’re taking your first step towards adulthood. You’ve got your own living space, and you can decorate it however you want!

Of course, you’re probably on a limited budget, so you don’t want to go overboard. So read on for 5 interior design tips for student apartments so you can make your space your own!

1. DIY Partitions

Many students live in studios, which provide nice open spaces. But you can create your own “rooms” by adding partitions.

Get yourself inexpensive workshop canopies, removable partitions, or curtains and rods, then configure your space how you want. This will help you separate work from play in your apartment.

2. Get Plenty of Houseplants

Any living space can feel sterile and cold, even in luxury student apartments. An easy way to combat this is to sprinkle your space with lots of houseplants!

Not only will these plants provide some warmth and life, but they’ll also improve your mental health. If you don’t have the time for intense care or have a black thumb, then go for low-maintenance plants like succulents, cacti, and pothos. You can even cheat by buying artificial plants instead.

3. Add Mirrors

If you’re living in a small studio or have a cramped room, then mirrors can do wonders.

For one, they can add some brightness to your space since it reflects light and bounces it around. Also, it can make your space feel bigger, as it’ll look like there’s additional room.

Try to position your mirrors next to the window and go for the biggest size you can.

4. Hang up Posters and Corkboards

It’s easy to feel homesick, especially if it’s your first time living away from your parents and your hometown. Stop looking at those drab white walls and hang up some posters and pinboards that’ll bring home a little closer to you.

Buy some posters of your favorite bands and movies. And fill your corkboard with old concert tickets, as well as pictures of family, friends, and pets.

The corkboard can also double as a convenient place to see what’s coming up next. You can pin up your class schedule, as well as flyers for upcoming events.

5. Hang up Fairy Lights

Another way to make your walls less boring is to hang up fairy lights. It’ll make any room feel warm and cozy.

If you put them in your bedroom, they can come in handy if your roommate wants to sleep but you want to stay up. The fairy lights will provide just enough light for you to work with, and they won’t interrupt your roommate’s sleep.

Feel at Home in Student Apartments

It can be exciting to move out of your parents’ home and into student apartments. No longer will you have to follow their rules; this apartment is yours to do as you wish!

So use our tips to create a custom and cozy space, all without breaking the bank. When you invite your friends over, they’ll be envious of what you’ve come up with!
