6 Celebrities Who Support LGBTQ Rights

Posted on August 24, 2022

LGBTQ Pride Month is celebrated every year in June, but awareness can still be increased and celebrity figures could play a huge part in achieving this goal.

But do you know which celebrities have shown their support for LGBTQ rights? By using their high profiles, famous people can highlight this important cause and help to promote equality for all in society.

Happily, there are many celebrities supporting LGBTQ rights, so to keep this article short, we’re going to narrow down our list to 6 famous stars.

Let’s jump in and find out who are some of the prominent LGBTQ supporters you’ve likely heard of before.

1. Hugh Jackman

Possibly one of the best actors to support the LGBTQ community is Hugh Jackman. The star of many Marvel movies such as Wolverine has described himself as an ally of LGBTQ people. He also recently gave his backing to the LGBTQIA+ community by wearing an Australian NRL club’s pride jersey after it became a source of controversy.

2. Taylor Swift

There are few bigger music stars than Taylor Swift, and the Grammy winner has been a part of the fight for equality for the LGBTQ community for many years. She also recently sang her pro-LGBTQ song ‘You Need to Calm Down’ in 2019.

3. Lena Waithe

Waithe’s writing about her experience of coming out to her family won her an Emmy Award in 2017. She has previously spoken about how queer representation had improved, but that there was still a long way to go until there was true equality.

4. George Clooney

If you go to the Clooney Foundation for Justice website, you’ll find a section dedicated to the importance of the rights of LGBTQ+ people. In 2019, Clooney also called for a boycott of 9 Los Angeles hotels due to their links to Brunei. The country was just about to pass a law allowing the whipping and stoning to the death of citizens proven to be gay.

5. Jennifer Lopez

Lopez has spoken of her admiration for her aunt when growing up, although at the time she didn’t realize her relative was dealing with being gay in a world that was different than it is today.

The superstar also tweeted her support to England and Wales when the countries legalized gay marriage in 2014.

6. Bruce Springsteen

‘The Boss’ is a high-profile, long-term supporter of LGBTQ rights. Springsteen supported a marriage equality bill in his home state of New Jersey back in 2009 and canceled a concert in North Carolina in 2016 because of an anti-LGBT law.

Many Celebrities Proudly Support LGBTQ Rights

When fans see their favorite actors and musicians supporting LGBTQ rights, this could encourage them to learn more about this important issue and to give their backing to this vital cause. As celebrities have such a huge reach, especially in the age of social media, it’s hoped that this can bring diversity and inclusion to the everyday lives of the LGBTQ community.

Keep an eye out for more celebrities who are keen on promoting LGBTQ rights!
