Gemstones come in all shapes and sizes, and each one has its own unique properties. Whether you are interested in adding a new piece of jewelry to your collection or just want to know more about these captivating stones, you are sure to find a few interesting facts here. In this blog post we will take a look at the 10 most fascinating facts about crystal jewels.

The Most Expensive Gemstone

Diamonds are one of the most popular gemstones and they come in a variety of colors. While most of them are white, some rare ones can be blue.

Blue Diamonds get their color from trace amounts of boron impurities in the stone and range from light to deep, vivid blue. They make up less than 0.1% of all Diamonds mined each year and are consequently very valuable – a single Blue Diamond can sell for millions of dollars.

In fact, in 2016 “The Oppenheimer Blue”, a rectangular, 14.62-carat, fancy vivid blue Diamond was sold for a stunning $57.5 million at Christie’s auctioneers in Geneva. With its price per carat of $3.93 million, this Diamond is unarguably the most expensive gemstone by price per carat ever sold.

Pearls Grow Inside Living Creatures

Pearls are the only gemstones that are found inside living creatures – oysters and less frequently in clams and mussels.

Natural pearls are formed when irritating debris gets stuck in a mollusk. If the oyster can not flush it out, it covers the debris up with layers of its own shell material. It takes approximately 2 years for the pearl to form as a result of this process.

Amber is the Softest Gemstone

Amber, a golden to brownish yellow translucent gemstone is exceptionally soft and light. Formed from the resin and sap of fossilized prehistoric trees, it is so light that it stays afloat in salt water.

Some Gemstones Change Color

The color of certain gemstones changes depending on the light source. For example, amethyst typically appears violet in daylight, but can take on a reddish hue when exposed to artificial light. This effect is known as “pleochroism” and it occurs when gemstones contain multiple chemically distinct regions that absorb light differently.

In addition to amethyst, other gemstones that exhibit pleochroism. Tourmaline that appears green in sunlight, may look blue or even black in incandescent light. Bi-color sapphires are blue in daylight and purple in artificial light.

While pleochroism can sometimes make it difficult to match gemstone jewelry with clothing, it also adds an extra layer of intrigue to these already fascinating stones.

Amethyst was considered to be the most valuable gemstone

Amethyst, a violet variety of quartz, was once considered to be the most valuable gemston due to its rarity.

The gemstone has a rich history, dating back to ancient Greece. The word “amethyst” comes from Greek word for “not intoxicated”. This is because Ancient Greeks believed that amethyst would prevent them from becoming drunk. As a result, amethysts were often used to decorate goblets.

Today, amethyst is still highly coveted by gem collectors and is often used in fine jewelry. However, since large amethyst deposits were discovered in Brazil in the early 19th century, its value has somewhat diminished.

Sapphire Comes in All Colors of the Rainbow

Sapphire comes in a wide range of colors. While blue sapphire is the most well-known, these gemstones can also be found in shades of pink, purple, yellow and green.

The different colors are due to the presence of different trace elements in the stones. For example, iron and titanium can cause a sapphire to appear blue, while chromium can give it a pink color.

Sapphires can also be treated with heat or chemicals to enhance their color. For example, yellow sapphires are often heated to turn them pink, while blue sapphires are irradiated to make them appear more intense.

Does Crystal Healing Exist?

The practice of crystal healing is based on the belief that gemstones can absorb, store, and release energy, which can in turn help to promote balance and well-being. While there is no scientific evidence to support these claims, many people swear by the power of crystals.

There are a variety of ways to use crystal healing, such as placing stones on the body or meditating with them. Some people also make gemstone elixirs by soaking stones in the water.

If you are interested in trying crystal healing, it’s important to do your research an choose gemstones that resonate with you. Some people prefer to work with a certified practitioner, who can help them select the right crystals and guide them through the healing process.
