Tips For Finding The Best Student Housing

Posted on September 15, 2022

Finding the best possible housing situation when you’re attending college can be challenging. If you’re new to college or you’re moving out for the first time, it’s not easy to know the best type of housing to choose. As you search for your new home away from home, be sure to do your research to find the best apartment to meet your needs.

Housing on or off campus can be expensive, especially if you’re in school full-time or are working part-time. Here are some tips to help you find the right student housing to fit your budget and needs:

1. Consider Safety

College students should consider safety as one of the most important factors in their apartment hunt. It’s essential that your new neighborhood is in a crime-free area with security measures like cameras and a guard gate. Campuses like Stadia Med Main offer students controlled access with a gated community and private access parking garages.

2. Pick a Location That Fits Your Lifestyle

The next step in finding an apartment is to consider one that fits your lifestyle. If you enjoy a laid-back lifestyle, consider living in a more residential area. This type of environment can give you more time to study or decompress after a hard day at work. If you’re hoping for a more lively experience, search for apartments closer to the city.

3. Don’t Forget To Budget for Rent

As you search for the best apartment, remember to consider your budget. For most students that are moving out for the first time, the cost of rent, utilities, and food comes as a shock. Factor these expenses into your budget to make sure you can live comfortably in your new apartment.

Students should be prepared to be in student housing for at least two years. This means you will have rent or a mortgage, as well as other living expenses. Consider living with roommates or living with another group of people who share your interests and socializing habits.

4. Look for Amenities

Amenities are another major component of student life. They can make all the difference between feeling at home or homesick while you are at school. Knowing which amenities you need in your housing before you sign anything will help ensure that your new place has everything you need.

Laundry is one of the preferred amenities college students should look for. Likewise, access to a gym, recreation room, and garden are other amenities students appreciate.

5. Consider the Proximity to Campus

Don’t forget to consider an apartment’s proximity to campus in your housing hunt. If you’re going to be living far away from campus, it will be tough for you to stay on top of your schoolwork. In fact, the commute itself can cut into your study time. Moreover, if you live too far away from campus, you may miss important class announcements and deadlines that are sent out through email.

By opting for closer living options, like an apartment near the edge of campus or a house just down the street from the library, you will have more time to live comfortably as it won’t take nearly as long to get there. You’ll also have easy access to dining halls and other on-campus amenities without the long commute time.

6. Look for Roommates

Finding the right roommate can be one of the most important parts of living in student housing. You’ll want to make sure you and your potential roommate are on the same page when it comes to things like alcohol, parties, money, and hygiene habits. Make it a point to communicate your thoughts and concerns with your roommates.

Be upfront about what you expect from your new living partners and what they can expect from you. Before you sign a lease, make sure to spend time getting to know them and finding out about their lifestyle before making a commitment.

When searching for housing, you’ll want to make sure you find the best space that meets your needs and preferences. Use this guide to make sure your college hunt for housing goes as smoothly as possible.
