Aquarium Size

The ideal aquarium size for an axolotl is 10-15 gallons. If you are keeping more than one axolotl in the aquarium, you will need to increase the size accordingly.
Filtration
In order to have a perfect axolotl habitat, filtration is key. There are a few different ways to filter an axolotl tank, but the most common and effective way is to use a canister filter. Canister filters are great because they are powerful and can filter a lot of water, which is important in a smaller tank.
Another option is a hang-on-back filter, but these are not as powerful and will need to be replaced more often. Whichever type of filter you choose, make sure it is the right size for your tank and that it is properly maintained.
Water Quality
This is one of the most important factors in keeping your axolotl healthy and happy. Test your water weekly, and adjust your filtration and/or water changes accordingly.
Be sure to perform regular water changes. Depending on the size of your habitat and the number of axolotls you have, you will need to change anywhere from 20-50% of the water every week.
Heating and Lighting
The ideal water temperature for axolotls is between 60 and 64 degrees Fahrenheit. A good way to maintain this temperature is to use an aquarium heater.
It is also important to provide a basking spot for your axolotl with a light source that emits both UVB and UVA rays. This basking spot should be no more than 10 degrees warmer than the surrounding water.
Substrate and Decor
These are key components to creating the perfect habitat for your axolotl. Gravel, sand, and rocks can all be used to create a naturalistic setting for your axolotl to live in. Plants can also be added to the habitat, but be sure to use species that are safe for aquatic environments.
Driftwood and live rocks can also be used to create hiding places and create a more visually pleasing habitat. When selecting substrates and decor for your axolotl habitat options, be sure to avoid any materials that could be sharp or toxic to your axolotl.
