Within each specialty, there are many different types of doctors. Knowing this can help you find which one is right for you. Want to know what they are? Read on and we’ll go into detail.
Family Doctor
Family doctors are also called general practitioners (GPs). They are trained to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions. They are the first point of contact for most patients.
They provide general medical care for all ages and refer patients to specialists when necessary.
Pediatrician
A pediatrician specializes in the medical care of infants, children, and adolescents. Pediatricians have special training and skills in the diagnosis and treatment of childhood illnesses, injuries, and developmental disorders.
They are also experts in child development and child health promotion. In addition to providing direct medical care, they also play an important role in the education of parents and caregivers about child health and safety.
Internist
Internists are doctors who focus on the healthcare of adults. Internists often work with other types of doctors, such as surgeons, to provide care for their patients.
Most internists are generalists, some internists, however, do choose to specialize in a particular area, such as pulmonology. Pulmonologists are internists who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory conditions and diseases.
They also provide critical care for patients who are hospitalized with respiratory problems and need respiratory ventilators to survive.
Obstetrician-Gynecologist
An obstetrician-gynecologist specializes in the field of obstetrics and gynecology. These doctors are often referred to as OB/GYNs. They provide medical care relating to pregnancy, childbirth, and the female reproductive system.
In addition, they often provide care for women who are experiencing problems with their reproductive system, such as infertility or menopause.
Surgeon
A surgeon is a medical doctor who specializes in the surgical treatment of diseases and injuries. Surgeons use a variety of instruments and techniques to repair or remove diseased or damaged tissue. Surgery is a demanding and challenging field, and surgeons must be able to think quickly and make decisions under pressure.
The most common type of surgeon is a general surgeon. General surgeons perform a wide range of surgical procedures, from simple hernia repairs to complex abdominal surgery.
Other common types of surgeons include orthopedic surgeons, who treat problems of the bones and joints; cardiovascular surgeons, who treat diseases of the heart and blood vessels; and neurosurgeons, who treat disorders of the nervous system.
