How To Open a Wine Bottle

Posted on September 20, 2022

Have you ever opened a wine bottle only to have the cork snap and shards of it rain down into your favorite glass? Pulling the cork out of the bottle too quickly can cause the bottle to shatter and leave you without your beverage.

Opening a wine bottle may seem like a simple enough task but there are some tips and tricks to make sure you get the perfect bottle every time. Did you know that every wine can be opened differently?

With the right methods, how to open a wine bottle will become second nature and you can focus on drinking your wine. Here are some wine bottle-opening tips that anyone can benefit from.

The Traditional Method

You can’t just yank the cork out of a wine bottle. You need the right tool for the job.

To open a wine bottle the traditional way, you will need a waiter’s corkscrew. Begin by removing the foil from the top of the bottle.

Next, insert the screw into the center of the cork and twist clockwise until the screw is halfway in. Then, place your thumb on top of the screw and the base of the corkscrew in the palm of your hand and push down, while continuing to twist the screw.

The cork should pop out. Finally, remove the cork from the screw and pour the wine.

Alternate Method

There are a few ways to open a wine bottle if you don’t have a corkscrew. The most common way is to use a knife.

Stick the knife into the spiral groove on the top of the cork and twist the knife back and forth until the cork starts to come out. Then, use your other hand to twist the base of the bottle and pull the cork out.

Another way to open a wine bottle is to use a shoe.

Remove the shoe’s heel and place the wine bottle in the shoe with the heel facing up. Then, hit the base of the bottle with the heel of your hand until the cork starts to come out.

You can use a key if you don’t have a shoe or a knife. Stick the key into the cork and twist it back and forth until the cork starts to come out. Then, use your other hand to twist the base of the bottle and pull the cork out.
