Product Design: Expectations vs Reality

Posted on July 25, 2022

A product cannot be designed with your first thought. The output should be equal to the desired result. To achieve the ideal state, you will need to undergo several iterations. You will discover several errors. Enrol in SolidWorks online course to learn the software from the comfort of your home.

This section will examine the gap between product design expectations and reality.

  • Actual Thinking vs Expected Thinking

There are many causes for the absence of human-machine interactions. One of them is that humans think of themselves as logical animals. In reality, we must accept human behaviour and create products that reflect our cognitive models.

  • Useful Information vs Complete Information

Generally, we expect our users to read all of the information on our product or website. However, we forget to respect our users’ time by providing unnecessary information. As a result, we must define our target audience and focus on providing information that meets their needs.

  • What the User Requires vs What We Offer

It is not necessary to redesign or reinvent any product regularly. You can improve results by sticking to what works rather than developing a new innovative solution. For example, you created the UI for our product, thinking it would be creative, but in the end, you discovered that your creativity confused your users.

  • Working without thinking versus working after asking the right questions

The project management team defines the product design path and solution. Once completed, the designer must meet with the project management team and ask pertinent questions. This improves your communication skills and makes you a better designer.

  • Web Content that is Difficult vs Easy to Understand

A company’s website serves as a marketing tool by providing information about the company’s products or services. If your website content is simple to understand, the user is more likely to purchase your product or service. If your website lacks such content, you can attract customers’ attention by creating a separate presentation about your product/service.

  • Product That Is Simple to Use vs Product That Is Complicated

A company must create a product that is simple to use. We must not complicate our products by adding useless features to existing products until they are no longer usable or understandable. It would be best if you did not try to match your competitors’ product features because the customer will have no other reason for choosing one over the other, which will hurt you. To stand out, you must concentrate on areas where your product excels and focus on your strengths.

  • Product Design Teams: Small vs Large

A small product design team of two to three decision-makers can be a huge success factor. Although building a product with such a small team is difficult, it will not be difficult to redesign a brief or defy convention with real creative people in a small group. Too many resources will only result in an over-designed, overworked, over-budget, and under-focused final product.

Conclusion

Often, the product design process appears to be a complete mess, and you must go through multiple iterations to reach the ideal state. You now know the product’s reality, so let us get to work! Check out these CAD courses for mechanical engineering that can help you get a design job.
