Tennis vs Badminton: What Are the Differences?

Posted on September 25, 2022

It is common for people to get mixed up about the different sports, especially ones that involve a racket and a ball. There is no need to worry as there are distinct differences between the different sports.

There are two very similar sports that tend to be confusing, these are badminton and tennis. A lot of individuals enjoy both sports, and as you can see, there are striking similarities between the two sports.

We have broken down the difference between tennis vs badminton and hope that it will help you decide which one you would like to get involved in.

Differences Between Tennis vs Badminton

While both tennis and badminton require a racket and net, the sports are quite different.

Tennis is played with a hard ball, and the game is focused on groundstrokes. Badminton is played with a shuttlecock, and the game is focused on volleying.

Tennis players use a variety of strokes to produce different speeds and spin on the ball. Badminton players use only three strokes, the forehand, backhand, and overhead.

You can learn more about this by watching a game or two.

Equipment and Gears

Though both involve hitting a ball over a net, there are several key differences between the two sports.

In tennis, players use a racket and a tennis ball. The ball is much larger than a badminton shuttlecock and has a felt layer that helps it bounce. Players also wear tennis shoes with special grip to help them move quickly around the court.

In badminton, players use a light racket and a shuttlecock. The shuttlecock is made of feathers and does not bounce. Badminton shoes are also lighter and have less grip to allow players to make quick changes of direction.

Court

Tennis is played on a large court, and badminton is played on a smaller court. Tennis is typically played outdoors, while badminton is typically played indoors.

A tennis court is much larger than a badminton court, and the net is also higher. This means that you have to hit the ball harder and run faster in tennis. In badminton, the shuttlecock is much lighter than a tennis ball, so you don’t have to hit it as hard.

Scoring

The scoring in a tennis game is a bit more complicated than in badminton. In tennis, to win a game, a player must win four points. In a badminton game, a player must win 21 points to win a game.

In tennis, a player must win two out of three sets to win a match. In badminton, a player must win three out of five sets to win a match. Thus, in terms of scoring, tennis is a more difficult game to win than badminton.

Tennis vs Badminton, Which is More Exciting?

There are many differences between tennis vs badminton. Tennis is a more physically demanding sport, while badminton requires more agility and coordination.

Tennis also has a higher scoring potential, while badminton is faster-paced and more strategic.

While both sports can be exciting to watch, tennis generally has more excitement potential due to the longer rallies and higher scoring potential.

Both badminton and tennis can bring you many benefits, including great reflexes, social skills, and discipline. You have to try both.
