Don’t Panic!
In a dental emergency, time is of the essence. Panicking is counterproductive and will only make you lose crucial time better spent doing anything else.
It would be best if you were calm and immediately did what you needed to do. For example, if the tooth was knocked out, try to find the tooth or the broken piece. This is so that you can bring it with you to the dentist later on.
Rinse With Warm Water
It’s important to rinse your mouth with warm water immediately. Doing so will help remove any debris or dirt that may be in the wound and will also help to keep the area clean.
This also helps avoid any kind of infection. Note that you should avoid rinsing with hot or cold water, as both may exacerbate the bleeding.
Use a Sterile Gauze
Use sterile gauze to help control bleeding. Apply pressure to the gauze for about 10 minutes or until the bleeding has stopped.
If the gauze becomes soaked with blood, don’t remove it. Just add more gauze on top of it and continue applying pressure. You can then use dental floss to secure the gauze in place.
Use a Dental Adhesive or Temporary Filling
Use a dental adhesive or temporary filling to protect the broken tooth. To use a dental adhesive, you only need to apply the glue to the damaged tooth and then place the dental prosthesis over the bond.
On the other hand, to use a temporary filling, place the filling material over the broken tooth and then use a dental tool to press the filling material into place. If you’re unfamiliar with these emergency protections, don’t worry, adhesives and fillings can be bought at most drug stores.
Gently Insert Tooth Back Into Its Socket
If the tooth is completely broken off, you will need to find the pieces of the tooth. Gently rinse the tooth with water and try to insert them back into the socket. But if this is not possible, place the tooth in a glass of milk.
